Move over, Dearfoams

What a full and interesting day I've had...

We didn't go to the morning service at church - our church repeats the morning service in the evening, so tonight we decided to try it out. I slept in until 9:30 this morning instead. A glorious and lovely way to spend a Sunday morning, if you ask me.

I had loads of errands I wanted to run this afternoon. One included stopping by a "Craft Fair" where a friend of mine was selling scrapbook products. Now, several years ago I used to attend these "fairs" regularly, enjoying the wide array of handcrafted goods. Well, either my taste has changed, or the wares have - but either way - I cannot believe how much crap I saw for sale today. The popular items this year (meaning I saw them for sale at every other booth) were little crocheted dish scrubbies, beaded bracelets and necklaces, hand knitted scarves, and soy candles. Some of these were pretty - but certainly nothing I could not take the time to make on my own. Then there were the, shall we say, unique items. Those little goodies where you either say "Why didn't I think of that?" or "What the heck?" Most are not worth mentioning. But one, for sure, was the stand-out "You've GOT to be freakin' kidding" item of the day.

One booth was selling slippers. Fluffy, white slippers. From the signage, I knew there had to be something special about them. These weren't your ordinary slippers, I could tell. I stood there for a full minute, reading the sign. I can't remember what they were called exactly - something like "cloud slippers" or something ridiculous like that. The sales pitch was - you put them on and then you can dust all your hard floor surfaces - then just take them off and throw them away - sort of like a Swiffer for your feet. I'll admit - at first they sort of caught my eye and I was drawn to them, but in a strange, sort of uncomfortable way. Like when you see someone you know, but you can't place them because they're out of context. You know - you see the librarian at the grocery store and it takes you a minute to figure out where you know her from. That's what it was like with the slippers. Like - "Hmm... something about those looks familiar... "

And then it hit me.

These weren't your ordinary slippers.

No.

These.were.slippers.made.out.of.maxi.pads.

You read that right.

I still can't believe it. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I'd have a hard time swallowing it. But I swear, someone was truly marketing these disturbing little treats for the feet.

If ever there was a day I wish I'd put my camera in my purse, it's today.

Then I could prove it to you.

I'm pretty sure I've gone to my last craft fair.

Honestly.

OK, now you are picking up Kelly's lying habits. I know you are. You have to be or my view of all that's creative and artistic in the world is completely wrong. I'm in despair.

I am going to have to side with Cathy today...I have been doing my fair share of craft sales lately - which is not a normal for me - and at the local women's show I saw some things that actually made me label North American women as silly, plain silly. I much prefer the fair trade craft sales, because things are made somewhere else or they have a purpose or something...maxi pad slippers ?? Come on - are we so lazy that we just won't sweep our floors. I must admit I did try out those gloved duster things - I hate dusting - but I am now back to pledge and an old towel cut up.
I do think that people are less creative nowadays and it is showing at these sales.

Laughing so hard, I'm crying. Still laughing as I type... this is so funny! I read it outloud to Alyssa and she is dying. At first, she said she wanted the slippers if they were Swiffers. Then I got to the maxi pad part and she said, "Eeeewwww. MOM! That is just gross." I have to agree with her. Give me a break. I can't believe someone actually had the nerve to market those. This entry rocks! You made me laugh right out loud - I needed that today.

  4. I assure you, I am not lying. I don't have nearly the amount of creative energy it would take to come up with that idea.

It's so sad and yet remarkably funny at the same time.

Do you suppose maybe that is what you do with them when you hit my age and find some back in the dark recesses of a cupboard you didn't know you had forgotten years ago.
    What a riot, Cathy !

I love it when people talk back...

It came out of the faucet that way.

It's been months since I've had a "Getting to Know You Wednesday." Life's been a little crazy. So today, when life is a little bit calm and I've got the least chaotic week I've had for ages, I thought I'd jump back in. So today, if you leave me a comment telling me your most favorite-ist movie line ever, I'll enter you in a drawing for your very own copy of Josh Groban's new Christmas CD - Noel . It's a good one, folks. Classic holiday music from such a wonderful vocalist... you'll like it, I promise. I just want one movie line. Not your three favorite... not a paragraph. Just one line. The one you find yourself repeating. The one that makes you laugh every time. Your very favorite movie line of all time. And if you're the first person to name the movie my title is from, you'll get an extra entry in the drawing. Now, let's hear it.

30,000? For real?

So, if you scroll down to the bottom of this here blog, you'll see that I'm probably just a day or two from reaching 30,000 hits. That's just freaky. And in just under 2 years. (I didn't add the counter until after I'd been blogging for several months...) So in honor of almost reaching that milestone, this weeks 'getting to know you Wednesday' question is this: What would you do if you won $30,000? I like this question, because it's not an overwhelming number, and therefore not brain-freeze inducing. It's big enough to be able to accomplish some nice little projects around the house, but not so large that you have to worry about your third cousins from the Ozarks showing up on your doorstep looking for cash so they can put veneers on their teeth. Answer my question this week and you'll be entered in a drawing for 30 special little trinkets in a lovely little goody box. (And when I say trinkets, I mean trinkets. We're talking 30 little lovelie

Are you ready for this?

How did it get to be Wednesday? Seriously. There aren't enough hours in the day - even when you're up at 2:00 am. And no - I didn't get up at 2:00 this morning. I slept all the way until 5:00! Anywho - I decided I needed something new to blog. Something to shake you all out of your 'thoughts from the deep recesses' stupor. Something to get your blood pumping and your fingers tingling. Something to inspire long and meaningful comments. From you. My beloved readers. It's a new weekly Thoughts From the Deep Recesses feature. It's "Getting to Know you Wednesday" Now this could either be lots of fun, or it could just totally flop, and I could go to bed crying because my blog readers are a bunch of takers who only come here to read and never interact. Like a piece of fresh fruit, you squeeze the juice out of my hard-written and well thought out posts and then you toss them aside, wandering on to the next blog with a simple click of your mouse.
