Road trips and old friends

We've been to Boise.

And back again.

Our family made the long and boring drive over the weekend to Boise to visit my dear friend Kelly.

Kelly and I have known each other since the late 80's. We met in San Jose - where I was living and doing an internship as an inner city missionary, and she was going to college and living with her grandparents.

We were in a bible study together. And we became fast friends.

Now - if you were to try to find two women who were more polar opposites in personality, I'm not sure you could.

Where I am matter-of-fact, she is idealistic.
I am clean and simple, and she is frilly and fluffy.
My home decor is green and gold and orange. Hers is pink. Lots of pink.
Kelly is feminine and girly. I am not so much.
I am steady and a little deadpan. Kelly is dramatic and expressive.
I am artistic and creative. Kelly is intellectual and bookish.
I don't do knick-knacks. Kelly does.
Kelly does leopard print and hats and long flowing hair. I am all about blue jeans and Keens and comfort.

Yes, we are different.
But we are good good friends.

And our kids get along beautifully.

We had a lovely weekend full of great food, lounging, laughter and amazing conversation.

I love Kelly.

And I love her boys.

Here's to old friends.
And maintaining old friendships.
And to our kids developing their friendships.
And to my husband, who has forged his own friendship with Kelly - which makes me immensely happy.

  2. Aww this is so sweet!
Hi there Cathy! I thought I would come visit you too! Do you know what I thought when I saw your pic (over at Kelly's)? That photo of yours reminds me of Amelie. Seriously, it could have been a photo of you in that movie.

This story of your friendship reminds me of the many family movies I have seen and makes me feel warm and fuzzy about the fact that yes, such things do happen and do come true.
    I'm weird.
    So, catchya!

It was about time you wrote another post about me.

I'm glad you had so much fun, Cath. Jenns is badgering me to "meet" Kelly, too, so I guess there's no escaping her. She sounds like someone you don't want to escape from though, thank God.

What's her stance on Pepperidge Farms Orange Milano cookies?

  5. Hello Everyone,
Darling Cathy- it was TOOO much fun! Thank you for coming to see me.
Milano Mint cookies are the only ones worth the calories, in my opinion, dear Other Kelly.

Well, t'other Kelly, as long as we're in the Milano family, I believe we can be friends.

I know I sounded Irish there for a minute, but I'm not really. Hey, I tried to get to your blog from your name, but it wouldn't work. I'll come visit you SOME day. hmph.

Happy Birthday Cathy! , originally uploaded by Pink Paper Peppermints . All of these sweet bloggy friends threw me a cyber-birthday party! How fun is that? Thank you, dear friends. I am touched. It's really just what I needed today. Sweet Tanya even made me a cake. If you want to follow the party around cyber-space, you can go to Melissa's blog to see everyone who is participating.

Getting to know you Wednesday

So it's been awhile. But I thought hearing from ya'll might cheer up my little snow encrusted Spokane self. So today, if I get at least 12 comments, I'll randomly pick one and send that lucky commenter any CD from Your Music . Whatever you want. So today, in light of mid-winter doldrums, I want you to answer the following three questions. To escape mid-winter doldrums, I like to: My favorite winter memory is: I know Spring is coming when: Okay, friends. Now it's your turn. Go to it.

The floodgates have opened.

So, I was doing pretty well managing my emotions. I kept telling people that I had processed a lot of my grieving over Tejan's departure back in January - when we were so close to saying goodbye... and so that must be why I wasn't feeling overly emotional about it this time around. I hadn't shed any tears. Hadn't choked up in that strange, overwhelming way where I feel like my whole head is filling up with fluid and my throat is so constricted I'm just sure I'm going to die. Nope. I was doing just fine. And then I went out to dinner with some girlfriends. And while I was a little socially inept because I'm a kind of overwhelmed and not really wanting to talk too much lately (perhaps in subconscious fear that I might touch on a nerve that would cause my aforementioned steely resolve to crumble) I thought I got through the evening fairly well. I didn't tear up - or need tissue for any fluids defiantly leaking from my facial orifices... until I made the a...
