The Long Awaited Peony

My Grandpa Young died in 2001, just over a year after his lovely wife Inez passed away.

When I was at their home after he passed away, helping to sort through 65 years of accumulated memories and possessions, I asked if maybe I could have the peony plant that had been in their front flower bed...

No one else wanted it, so I dug it up, stuck it in a bucket and drove it all the way across the state.

When we got home, I dug up a spot in my own flower bed, and planted it.

Transplanted peony... check.

The next spring, I watched eagerly as it's tender branches grew.

It unfurled into a bush that was about a foot high, but no buds formed.

Each year, I watched the same thing happen. Lots of foliage, no buds.

I remember hearing our local lawn and garden radio show host (I listen to it while I garage sale on Saturday mornings) say once that peonies really dislike being moved - and may take as long as five years to recover from being transplanted. So I waited.

Then, in the spring of 2006, the peony got buds. Not a lot... I think I counted three or four. But I was thrilled to see them forming and could hardly wait until they opened. It had been so long that I didn't even really remember what color the flowers were. Each day as I walked out to the garage to get in my car, I would check their progress...

Until one morning when I went to let the dog out and I looked toward the flower bed... and the peony was gone.

Not smashed by an accidental ball kicked by one of the kids...

Not bent by a misplaced foot...

G.O.N.E.

I went outside, literally rubbing my eyes in disbelief.

On further investigation, I found tiny little stubs, about a half inch long, where branches used to be.

My peony had been mowed.

I burst into tears.

Don't ask me why anyone would think that a bush (that by now had developed into a beautiful, lush green shrub about 18 inches in height) would be something you should chew up with a lawn mower... to this day I cannot imagine what the unnamed mower pusher was thinking... why on earth would you mow the flower beds?

And so began my waiting again.

2007. No buds.

2008. No buds.

2009. No buds. Apparently mowing a peony is akin to transplanting it...

2010. BUDS!!!

And finally, after eight and a half years of waiting, I was rewarded with four gorgeous, hot pink peonies.

I wish I could tell my Grandma the story... she would get such a kick out of it... and I know she would love and appreciate how precious those four peonies were to me.

It was worth the wait.

  1. Cathy - that made the tears come when I read it. Such sweet memories from that little peony plant. I remember when he got mowed down and how upset you were. Patience pays off !! It is SO BEAUTIFUL. You are RIGHT - Grandma would have been so thrilled for you and it would have meant so much to her to know how much you treasured it !!

  2. hmmm-so many things i want to say -this practical lesson is huge - I am sure you see how much this reflects the waiting season you have been in and how faithful you have been to wait patiently for the fulness and how grateful you will be as you see the rich colour and know how hard you have fought for this...I love the picture - the time- the pain - and the glory...God is talking so loud and clear for you...absolutely beautiful.

  3. You are so patient! Glad you were finally rewarded, and now just imagine how much SWEETER those blossoms are - as precious as they would have been five years ago, they are even more so now! :) I have african violets that I rescued nearly dead from my mom's house after she died. I nursed them and nursed them, and almost exactly a year after her death, when I was feeling very blue about the anniversary, I spied the first flowers on those plants. It was almost an "everything IS going to be ok" message. I cried probably just as much as you did to see those peonies. These are the only house plants I have ever kept alive and I would crumble if I ever lost them. Our loved ones live through our memories sometimes in the most unusual ways. Isn't it great that God gives us that? :)

I love it when people talk back...

It came out of the faucet that way.

It's been months since I've had a "Getting to Know You Wednesday." Life's been a little crazy. So today, when life is a little bit calm and I've got the least chaotic week I've had for ages, I thought I'd jump back in. So today, if you leave me a comment telling me your most favorite-ist movie line ever, I'll enter you in a drawing for your very own copy of Josh Groban's new Christmas CD - Noel . It's a good one, folks. Classic holiday music from such a wonderful vocalist... you'll like it, I promise. I just want one movie line. Not your three favorite... not a paragraph. Just one line. The one you find yourself repeating. The one that makes you laugh every time. Your very favorite movie line of all time. And if you're the first person to name the movie my title is from, you'll get an extra entry in the drawing. Now, let's hear it.

30,000? For real?

So, if you scroll down to the bottom of this here blog, you'll see that I'm probably just a day or two from reaching 30,000 hits. That's just freaky. And in just under 2 years. (I didn't add the counter until after I'd been blogging for several months...) So in honor of almost reaching that milestone, this weeks 'getting to know you Wednesday' question is this: What would you do if you won $30,000? I like this question, because it's not an overwhelming number, and therefore not brain-freeze inducing. It's big enough to be able to accomplish some nice little projects around the house, but not so large that you have to worry about your third cousins from the Ozarks showing up on your doorstep looking for cash so they can put veneers on their teeth. Answer my question this week and you'll be entered in a drawing for 30 special little trinkets in a lovely little goody box. (And when I say trinkets, I mean trinkets. We're talking 30 little lovelie

Are you ready for this?

How did it get to be Wednesday? Seriously. There aren't enough hours in the day - even when you're up at 2:00 am. And no - I didn't get up at 2:00 this morning. I slept all the way until 5:00! Anywho - I decided I needed something new to blog. Something to shake you all out of your 'thoughts from the deep recesses' stupor. Something to get your blood pumping and your fingers tingling. Something to inspire long and meaningful comments. From you. My beloved readers. It's a new weekly Thoughts From the Deep Recesses feature. It's "Getting to Know you Wednesday" Now this could either be lots of fun, or it could just totally flop, and I could go to bed crying because my blog readers are a bunch of takers who only come here to read and never interact. Like a piece of fresh fruit, you squeeze the juice out of my hard-written and well thought out posts and then you toss them aside, wandering on to the next blog with a simple click of your mouse.
