Play

I'm working this morning on a circle journal entry - the subject: Play.

And it's really hard for me.

I don't play, really - at least not in the traditional sense.

When I think of traditional "play," I think of outdoor pursuits, sports, board games, tag, dodgeball, and all sorts of things that make me have that same nervous twinge I felt in seventh grade volleyball games when it was my turn to serve.

See, I was terrible. At most all sports. I just had no natural ability.

In high school, I was a cheerleader, which I was great at (except for the dancing - I'm a terrible dancer) because I was FULL of spirit and loud and organized and a leader and very comfortable in front of a crowd.

And so I began my finding my way into the world of play...

I play cards. There's a long history of grown-ups playing pinochle late into the night in my family - which Asia and I have carried on with my parents. I love to play cards.

I play with photography. Trying different lenses and settings and angles and light...

I play with art. Paint and paper and glue and glitter and design and balance and messy fingers.

I play with my kids. I love to get goofy with them - surprising them with off the wall comments and non-traditional Mommy behavior.

I play with my dog. Tug of war. Fetch. Chase. Training. She really makes me play.

I play with Asia. Nobody makes me laugh harder.

I play with my girlfriend Brooke. Crazy girl.

I play at work with new products - making samples - helping people see how they can use things in new and different ways.

I play piano.

I play in the kitchen with flour and sugar and frosting and chocolate chips and cinnamon and oodles and oodles of recipes.

I play.

How do you play?

  1. We play at a lot of the same things!

I play at my scrapbook table, on the piano (my first musical love), on the guitar (the instrument I'm struggling to love--I'm pretty much a beginner), with my husband when we are lucky enough to have enough free time together to remember what dating was like, with my kids when I remember to take a break from all those pressing responsibilites to focus on these precious little ones who grow too fast, and with my yarn and needles. (I still haven't decided if that's play or work--I started knitting out of a compulsive need to have busy hands at all moments of the day, so this is my "watching a movie" activity.)

I occasionally "play" in the kitchen, but although I enjoy cooking, it is too much of a regular routine, necessity-type item for me to call it play. It's just something I do.

Bless you! Please post pictures of the journal when you're done! (Or remind me to check your 2 Peas gallery.)

Oh yeah, this is a great CJ theme. I think I may use it the next time I do a circle journal. What a fun subject to ponder. How do I play? Hmmmm, that is really a good question. I don't play in the kitchen cuz I hate to cook. I don't play with the dog cuz he slobbers on me and makes me nuts. I do play with my kids - word play, which is a fun way to play. And when we are all giggling, then I consider that to be the best sort of play on earth.

I love it when people talk back...

It came out of the faucet that way.

It's been months since I've had a "Getting to Know You Wednesday." Life's been a little crazy. So today, when life is a little bit calm and I've got the least chaotic week I've had for ages, I thought I'd jump back in. So today, if you leave me a comment telling me your most favorite-ist movie line ever, I'll enter you in a drawing for your very own copy of Josh Groban's new Christmas CD - Noel . It's a good one, folks. Classic holiday music from such a wonderful vocalist... you'll like it, I promise. I just want one movie line. Not your three favorite... not a paragraph. Just one line. The one you find yourself repeating. The one that makes you laugh every time. Your very favorite movie line of all time. And if you're the first person to name the movie my title is from, you'll get an extra entry in the drawing. Now, let's hear it.

30,000? For real?

So, if you scroll down to the bottom of this here blog, you'll see that I'm probably just a day or two from reaching 30,000 hits. That's just freaky. And in just under 2 years. (I didn't add the counter until after I'd been blogging for several months...) So in honor of almost reaching that milestone, this weeks 'getting to know you Wednesday' question is this: What would you do if you won $30,000? I like this question, because it's not an overwhelming number, and therefore not brain-freeze inducing. It's big enough to be able to accomplish some nice little projects around the house, but not so large that you have to worry about your third cousins from the Ozarks showing up on your doorstep looking for cash so they can put veneers on their teeth. Answer my question this week and you'll be entered in a drawing for 30 special little trinkets in a lovely little goody box. (And when I say trinkets, I mean trinkets. We're talking 30 little lovelie

Are you ready for this?

How did it get to be Wednesday? Seriously. There aren't enough hours in the day - even when you're up at 2:00 am. And no - I didn't get up at 2:00 this morning. I slept all the way until 5:00! Anywho - I decided I needed something new to blog. Something to shake you all out of your 'thoughts from the deep recesses' stupor. Something to get your blood pumping and your fingers tingling. Something to inspire long and meaningful comments. From you. My beloved readers. It's a new weekly Thoughts From the Deep Recesses feature. It's "Getting to Know you Wednesday" Now this could either be lots of fun, or it could just totally flop, and I could go to bed crying because my blog readers are a bunch of takers who only come here to read and never interact. Like a piece of fresh fruit, you squeeze the juice out of my hard-written and well thought out posts and then you toss them aside, wandering on to the next blog with a simple click of your mouse.
