Hot.

I'm not a huge fan of summer.

I've always known it in the back of my mind.

But have never said it out loud.

Here's one reason why: I don't like HOT weather.

And it gets pretty hot here in the summer. Especially this week. It's supposed to be over 100 degrees for the next three days in a row. And it's already been in the 90's all week long. And it's not supposed to cool down to the high 80's until next Wednesday.

(Sidenote: I lived in Fresno during the summer of 1988. And that summer we had something like 20 days in a row over 95 degrees. Wow. That was a killer. I lived in a house with no air conditioning. We had a swamp cooler and lots of mice in that house. It was hellish. I was not a happy camper. But perhaps that's another story for another day.)

My sweet husband, bless him, bought me a window unit air conditioner for our living room.

It helps. A bit. Poor thing is pumping like crazy and I'm afraid to see the power bill when it comes. But at least I'm not sitting here sweating like I have been.

So that's a good thing.

But when it's this hot for this many days in a row, I start to get pretty cranky.

So maybe you can all help me turn it around. Help me recognize the beauty of summer. Help me appreciate the heat. (yeah, right.) Maybe even come to like it... or at least tolerate it with a happy heart.

Or maybe I could just move to the coast, where 85 is a hot day.

Tell me. What do you like about summer? I need to hear it. 'Cause right now, I don't like it one bit. I want it to be 40 degrees out. So I can put on a sweater and cuddle up in my favorite blanket.

See? I really need help.

  1. Come here. Seriously. Pack up the kids and an overnite bag. I am on the coast...and while it's warm, there is the water and a swing and a boat and floaties....and margaritas are so easy to make in the summer. Come.

We're about two blocks from you and we have a house that can be a reprieve from the heat. Rebecca thinks it is too cold in here! Goins are always welcome here!

Sorry - can't help you much with Summer - it's not my favorite time of year either - it allows for lots of road construction - and that is bad this year in Spokane. Fall is coming soon!

  3. What would we do without the carefree no clock kinda days, just hanging out in the sprinkler kinds days? Don't get them any other time than summer. Plus, just one more excuse to go get ice cream - it's hot outside! Without summer we couldn't wiggle our toes in the grass, or lay out on a blanket in the coolness of the evening, and watch the stars.....or have a nice little fire in the back yard and roast marshmallows....

    Did that help at all??

If not, well think of those frigid days in February when you could barely get from the house to the car without your eyelashes freezing to your cheeks!

  4. I moved up here from the central coast of CA, where summer meant fog. It used to irritate me knowing that the rest of the country was warm and I was not. And even if it got warm, as soon as the sun went down it was 50 degrees and you had to put on long pants and a sweatshirt in July. The best thing about summer here is 80 degrees at 10pm. I never sat outside at night until I moved here, what a treat! Yes, it's 80 at night because it's 105 during the day, but I am willing to overlook that. Probably because work and home have a/c!

    Cathy,
I live in foggy Northern CA where a good summer day is a day without drizzle and it gets to 60 degrees. Sometimes we've had 28 days of fog--no sun in sight.

I love hot weather. My family spends a month in Mexico on alternate summers. I live for hot days where you sweat. I always feel so healthy drinking water and my skin looks so much healthier. I also love warm nights and fresh mornings that are filled with light at 6 a.m. I love summer.

    Does this help?

    P.S.
Hey, what about totally cute sundresses and flip flops and ice cream? I love summer fashions!

What about fruit smoothies and a nice glass of wine? What about the smell of suntan lotion and the Beach Boys on the Ipod? What about ice cold watermelon and fresh peaches? What about farmers' markets bursting with fresh produce and the sight of mile high corn fields? What about picking berries ...There are lots of things to love about summer....Sigh. I want to hold onto these lazy days.

And by the way, it was 80 degrees in San Francisco today--glorious and warm. What a perfect day.

What? No picture today? Ahhh! I so look forward to see what you have to show us each day.
Jeez, too hot even for a daily picture. You must be suffering, you poor child. Cold showers are great on the hot days, but you don't get much done. Phfew, when will it end?

Are you ready for this?

How did it get to be Wednesday? Seriously. There aren't enough hours in the day - even when you're up at 2:00 am. And no - I didn't get up at 2:00 this morning. I slept all the way until 5:00! Anywho - I decided I needed something new to blog. Something to shake you all out of your 'thoughts from the deep recesses' stupor. Something to get your blood pumping and your fingers tingling. Something to inspire long and meaningful comments. From you. My beloved readers. It's a new weekly Thoughts From the Deep Recesses feature. It's "Getting to Know you Wednesday" Now this could either be lots of fun, or it could just totally flop, and I could go to bed crying because my blog readers are a bunch of takers who only come here to read and never interact. Like a piece of fresh fruit, you squeeze the juice out of my hard-written and well thought out posts and then you toss them aside, wandering on to the next blog with a simple click of your mouse. You read ...

Good morning, peeps. It's Friday. There's frost outside this morning. *FROST!* This week has been ridiculously chilly. I'm having mixed feelings about blogging lately. Mostly because I feel like all I've been doing is whine about being tired. Or overwhelmed. And because comments are lacking. And because I can't seem to think about anything to write about except Tejan. And because some of the thoughts I'm having are too private for the blog - or too repetitive. Or too unformed to turn into actual words you all could understand. So I'm struggling a bit. And yet, I'm committed to documenting the process I'm in. So I'll keep writing when the words come. And when they don't, like this morning, when I looked at that intimidating blinking cursor and my mind went blank and I started to break out in a cold sweat and began by talking about the weather... well, then, I'll just gracefully (or not so gracefully) back out of the room... tail between m...

It came out of the faucet that way.

It's been months since I've had a "Getting to Know You Wednesday." Life's been a little crazy. So today, when life is a little bit calm and I've got the least chaotic week I've had for ages, I thought I'd jump back in. So today, if you leave me a comment telling me your most favorite-ist movie line ever, I'll enter you in a drawing for your very own copy of Josh Groban's new Christmas CD - Noel . It's a good one, folks. Classic holiday music from such a wonderful vocalist... you'll like it, I promise. I just want one movie line. Not your three favorite... not a paragraph. Just one line. The one you find yourself repeating. The one that makes you laugh every time. Your very favorite movie line of all time. And if you're the first person to name the movie my title is from, you'll get an extra entry in the drawing. Now, let's hear it.
